This story of self-discovery traced the journey of a team of geographically dispersed and culturally different people. It shed light on the process of how they discovered hidden obstacles to create a better working environment for their team. They reached a moment of revelation that helped two distant groups ally and work together as a team. Their agreement was formally part of the team`s culture, with a series of working agreements binding them. The following table summarizes what I learned as a coach. As with any setting, it is important to adapt it to one`s own needs and culture. If you are introducing work arrangements into your team, you should consider the most appropriate approach. However, in my experience as an agile consultant, the most productive product development teams all have one thing in common: consensus. They all felt involved, listened to and respected and could clearly establish the link between their individual goal and the vision of the product or project. It`s easy to get into projects with new teams, but work agreements create the kind of solid foundation needed for effective cooperation, especially between people from different backgrounds, assumptions, and experiences.

The most important factor in developing a teamwork agreement is to identify the challenges your team is facing. Test the unique challenges of collaboration for your team, and then focus on solving them specifically. The team establishes all the individual agreements in the work agreement and posts them on the team wall. In the months that follow, team members begin to get used to the idea of reminding their colleagues of behaviors that do not respect the agreement. Both sprints, Steve asks in a retrospective: «Is this still our working agreement? Is there anything you want to change? The list evolves as team members find more areas where they see benefits. After six months, they are in a much better position to deal with tense problems within the team or when external pressure intensifies on them. Most agile transformations start with training. They discuss how teams are formed and some methodological details. For example, I did a scrum workout. We discussed how and what to do so that a team can establish its own agile working agreement. On the other hand, I saw teams hanging on to a thread and achieving little or no of their goals, because team members couldn`t see them fit the overall picture and were simply not invested. Fortunately, there is a way to solve this problem: the teamwork agreement.

Work conventions are often used in the context of Agile, but can be used by any team. Through the work agreement process, teams are endowed with an increased awareness of the interaction between individuals….
